How to make peace with a changing season.

Christa Hesselink

...and so it begins.

It's the first day of Fall.

I don't know too many people who don't like this time of year. That crisp air, those pumpkin-spice lattes, and the first trees showing their sassy colour - we eat it up.

And at the same time, there's this underlying dread.

"I hear it's going to be a harsh winter."
"Can you believe how early it gets dark?"
" Oh, I hate the cold!"

We seem to have the ability to hold both the best and worst at the same time. To savour & surrender simultaneously. To embrace and empty endlessly.

And I think this is a good thing.

Making peace with a changing season in life is made easier when you can see the bigger picture, take the long view, and hold these sorts of tensions with grace.

In a season of plenty, where life feels as though it's firing on all cylinders - let's be grateful - remembering that it won't always be like this.

There's a gift in it all for us.

And in a season of want, where having an overflow of anything good seems to be in lean supply, let's be hopeful - remembering that life is dynamic, always moving and one day we'll find ourselves in a different place.

There's a gift in it all for us.

Living gratefully and hopefully is another way of describing what it means to live with faith.

And living with faith is the artful action of recognizing that all the seasons are needed.

Harvest-time is the birthplace for new seeds to be found.

But seeds of new life can only be acquired when something dies.

There’s no life without a death.
Plant without a seed.
Up without a down.

So, thank you Autumn. You have so much to teach us.

And thank you God for giving us all THE seasons, and all OUR seasons.
